Grand Scam: Government Payers Can Fight Healthcare Fraud

The U.S. healthcare system wastes $750 billion every year, about 30 cents of every medical 
dollar, according to a study by the Institute of Medicine.1 Fraud, or intentional 
misrepresentation, adds up to $75 billion. Waste—or use of funds without a real need—and 
abuse—unsound medical or business practices that increase costs—account for the 
remainder.
